Logically, it would seem that strengthening the muscles and nerve connections that close the eyes could help but I haven't found any anecdotes or research studies online. If lagophthalmos only occurs during sleep, it is referred to as nocturnal lagophthalmos. I do not want to have surgery again but my life is basically a depressed and anxious mess because of the dry eye.įrom my view, it seems that much of lagopthalmos is probably due to weakness of the orbicularis oculi and or some facial nerve dysfunction for those who have it from birth. Its been 10 years since the suegery and the surgeon said I'm basically out of luck. I've been severely symptomatic for the past 5 years. In my early 20s, I had cosmetic blepharoplasty and I got full blown lagopthalmos during the day and my nightime lagopthalmos has worsened. If people wake up with dry eyes, they may feel a scratching or burning sensation, excessive watering, blurred vision, or redness of the eyes. For nocturnal lagophthalmos, a California company called Eye Eco makes a set of soft, flexible moisture goggles for nighttime wear. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of NL and sleep quality in DED patients. Long story short, I had some mild pre-existing nocturnal lagopthalmos when I was younger which caused me no issues. PMCID: PMC7399990 DOI: 10.3390/life10070105 Abstract Nocturnal lagophthalmos (NL) refers to the inability to close the eyelids during sleep, which is known to affect dry eye disease (DED) symptoms and sleep quality. Nocturnal lagophthalmos is found by asking the patient to gently close their eyes and lie down as if asleep. Lagophthalmos is associated with dry eyes, poor sleep, as well as irritated, painful eyes on awakening. Has anyone had any success in fixing lagopthalmos or nocturnal lagopthalmos using nonsurgical methods? Like any eye exercises or manual stretching of eyelids or anything like that? Answer: Nocturnal lagophthalmos is the inability to close the eyelids during sleep.
